Artist Info

Miguel Migs

Miguel Migs stands at the forefront of electronic music's soulful realm. Whether tackling his original productions or remixes, he achieves an organic-soulful sound by combining the best of both the electronic music world and live instrumentation. For many years, Miguel's productions have been included on countless compilations and his records have slid into the crates of top DJs across the globe. His music has also landed on numerous TV Shows, including Six Feet Under, Sex in the City, and MTV's Road Rules and Real World.

Contrary to many of his club-centric DJ/producer peers, Miguel is not always concerned with the potential dance floor appeal of his soulful tracks. "It's music you can enjoy and listen to at home, in the club, or anywhere. Not necessarily just to rock the dance floor." explains the Northern California native, who grew up with a true love of reggae, soul, classic rock, jazz, hip-hop and just about everything else.

His impressive discography includes more than 100 original productions and remixes on seminal independent labels such as Salted Music, Naked Music, Astrelwerks, Yoshitoshi, NRK, Black Vinyl, Large, Chez, Transport recordings, Om Records, Defected Records and many others. His recordings have consistently made waves in the underground circuit and have landed on DJ hype charts internationally. He goes highly regarded when it comes to remixes, having worked with major label artists such as Macy Gray, Lionel Ritchie and Britney Spears. Miguel additionally has released numerous mix CD compilations on labels including Defected, Naked Music, Southport Weekender and NRK.

Never one to sit still, Migs started his own label Salted Music in 2004. Having been associated with an extensive number of labels throughout his career, he came to realize a desire to have his own base, a vehicle for building his own catalogue of quality material. Salted Music is a foundation for Migs to choose and release music that inspires him, as well as release his own productions and compilations.

A musician at heart, Miguel's professional career started at age 18 as songwriter and lead guitarist for Santa Cruz local dub band Zion Sounds, whose Jamaican and African rhythms earned them gigs with globally known reggae outfits Culture and Burning Spear among others. After the disbanding of Zion Sounds in the mid 1990's, rather than form a new band, Miguel put his focus and creative energy into experimenting with the production of electronic music. As a producer, Miguel realizes a strong connection between his electronic music productions and live musical background. He writes his own lyrics and plays his own instruments, be it guitar, bass, percussion or keyboard.

As a DJ, Miguel maintains the same approach to his sets as to his productions, combining a variety of influences and styles fused together. The result is funky, deep, soulful, bumping house music. "I like to mix it up and keep it moving smoothly, taking the dance floor through a very spontaneous mix into the realms of quality, deep house music depending on the mood in the room", says Migs. "But, whether it's vocal, tracky, dubby, moody, percussive or broken beat, the sound always remains soulful and funky.

March 2007 saw the release of 'THOSE THINGS', Miguel's sophomore album released on his very own Salted Music imprint. "Those Things represents an open-minded musical spectrum that can have multi-meaning and definition combining forward thinking electronic music elements with live instrumentation inspired by old soul, funk, reggae, jazz, rock and hip-hop,” states San Francisco-based Migs about his follow-up to his 2002 debut album ‘Colorful You’ (Astralwerks/Naked Music). ). The album received massive acclaim and support worldwide and features Sadat X from 'Brand Nubian', Lisa Shaw, LT, Fred Ross from the legendary 'Family Stone', reggae heavy weight Junior Reid, and Tim Fuller.

2007 also saw Miguel launch his eight piece live band "Petalpusher" which fuses electronic inspirations with organic musical elements. The band consists of eight top notch musicians, who have worked with the likes of Prince, Spearhead, and Tower of Power. Lisa Shaw and Tim Fuller are on lead vocals. It is a unique and diverse blend of old school funk, soul and current dance rhythms that result into a unique and intoxicating live experience. With an arsenal of material to choose from, the band has been focusing on performing new and old songs from Miguel and Lisa’s extensive catalogue. The band played the Virgin Festival in Baltimore in 2007, the San Jose Jazz Festival as well as all the major cities in North America with resounding success. A work still in progress with much more in store so look out.

Miguel can be found regularly traveling the globe as one of the industries top-leading DJs, as well as at home in the studio writing and creating music, which is his main love and passion. "It's all about the balance between the touring and traveling, studio work and everything else in life." Miguel says, " Music has no boundaries and I get inspired by everything around me." Migs certainly draws no limits to his artistry.

Lee Coombs

Bending boundaries and ignoring the status quo – where would the Breakbeat scene be today without Lee Coombs. For over a decade this British producer has been at the forefront of it all; releasing groundbreaking mix CDs, remixing the world’s most acclaimed artists and knocking out dancefloor destroying productions that are considered classics years after their release.

A seasoned veteran, Coombs first hit the DJ slopes in 1989, bathing himself in the acid house scene at parties around London and Cambridge. Crucial in shaping his all-encompassing approach to DJing and production, this boundary-less approach would become Coombs’ trademark, mixing up breaks, house, electro, techno and acid with dexterous assurance.

In 1998 Coombs made his first massive strike on the breaks scene as the prized recruit of then ‘up and coming’ label Finger Lickin’, with the man’s acclaimed album of 2001 ‘Future Sound of Retro’ signalling his arrival on the world stage. Such was the impressive nature of Coombs’ debut that respected industry figurehead Pete Tong noted him as the ‘man to watch’. An ‘Essential New Tune’ accolade soon followed courtesy of Tong, with Coombs’ re-rub of Quivver’s ‘One Last Time’ making dance fans weak at the knees the world over.

Such was the demand for Coombs, that luminary Paul Oakenfold was soon knocking at his door, resulting in the critically acclaimed Perfecto Breaks album of 2002. After landing the job of remixing Oakenfold’s ‘Time of your Life’ and then further re-rubs for world class acts such as Moby, New Order, Lamb and Planet Funk, Coombs’ status as one of the industry’s most in-demand artists quickly developed. Even the BBC was under the Coombs spell with them flying him over to Prague in the summer of 2003 to record the theme music for the television program ‘Born to Win’ with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ever the musical innovator, Lee Coombs’ 2004 album release ‘Breakfast of Champions’ signalled a significant evolution in his sound. Collaborating with some of the most respected artists in his field – from Dylan Rhymes to Christian J, Andy Gardner (Plump DJs) and Jem Panufnik (Soul of Man), the album charted the ambitious new territory of Tech Funk, injecting the Breaks sound with butt-shaking elements of House, Electro and Techno. It was a style Coombs would make his own, alongside fellow innovators Meat Katie, Elite Force and Dylan Rhymes. Featured on the acclaimed album was the cracking single ‘Shiver’ (feat. Katherine Ellis) which was snapped up by classic house imprint Azuli and became one of the biggest vocal house anthems of 2005, whilst the ‘Alright All-Night/Dubhead’ and ‘Obsessional Rhythm’ singles went straight to no.1 in the DJ Mag Beats & Breaks Chart.

Departing Finger Lickin’ for new pastures in 2005, Coombs’ focus shifted to releasing music through his own Thrust Recordings imprint as well as Adrift and Meat Katie’s Lot49 (then Whole9Yards). It was at this time that he started his Thrust club nights in San Francisco, with the quarterly events becoming one of the hottest tickets on the West Coast.

Change has further characterised Coombs in recent times. Not only has the recently married Brit relocated to the USA to settle with his new wife, but he also formally joined the Lot49 team and is set to mix the label’s latest compilation due out in February 2008.

If that’s not enough, a groundbreaking new artist album is also on the way. While still dancefloor focused, Coombs views this as his most ambitious project yet with a range of tempo from 100 – 128 bpm and collaborations with the likes of Longrange (Phil Hartnoll from Orbital’s new band), Meat Katie, Seasunz, Katherine Ellis and many others.

When he is not in the producers chair, Coombs regularly tours all corners of the globe and is a bona-fide fans favourite throughout Europe, the USA, Australia, Asia and of course the UK. His popularity has also ensured his repeat appearance at infamous festival ‘The Burning Man’ in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.

In an industry that’s so often governed by trends and fads, Coombs’ unwavering ability to simultaneously destroy dancefloors and push musical boundaries almost 20 years since he first touched a pair of turntables is a remarkable achievement in itself. With plans to further spread his production wings to writing music for film and TV, as well as producing bands, there’s little doubt that his impressive sonic skills will be rocking ears for many years to come.

Bassnectar

What started back in the mid nineties as an experiment fusing youth culture and social action has turned into a multi-faceted, multi-faced creature called Bassnectar. It is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton, and it exists as an open-sourced musical project that is as diverse as it is heavy, as raw as it is meticulous, and as fierce as it is imaginary.

Bassnectar combines sound and force with weight while spanning the spectrum of sonic style, covering every genre imaginable, and smashing it all into a collision of wobbling, perverted basslines, hypnotic hide-and-seek adventures, and pretty much anything that strikes his fancy. He calls the end product “omnitempo maximalism,” which basically means no rules, no limitations, and no hesitation in fusing the familiar with the strange or the classic with the cutting edge. Whether remixing, collaborating, writing, DJing, performing live or working on constant social networking, Bassnectar’s music is the lure and social impact is the very sincere intention. According to Ashton, “we are so blessed, and so deeply fortunate to be alive and awake right now…it’s a basic truth, but it’s very powerful. I think privilege confers responsibility, and Bassnectar is a reflection of that opportunity to give back; the motion of my cells bouncing back at the world.”

Idealistic? Maybe. But with wall-to-wall shows night after night in city after city, with endless music being concocted and pumped out of the labs by a growing legion of collaborators and bass-scientists, and with an ever-growing fan base of loyal bass-freaks on the loose, maybe idealism isn’t all that bad…

Stay tuned for gobs of new releases on Bassnectar’s own imprint “Amorphous Music” as well as heaps of free tracks, mixes and transmissions at podcast.bassnectar.net. The live show explodes over 100 nights a year, and we have many surprises in store for 2009!

Hyper

Constantly at the cutting edge of dance music since the turn of the millennium, Hyper is a DJ in world-wide demand. From the Far East to Australia, across the breadth of the United States and throughout Europe, his sets are never less than perfect, blending blistering beats and ripping bass with a panache that is the envy of the dance world.

His past as a compiler of the mix CD is unparalleled. Starting the lauded ‘Y3K’ series that set the pace in the leftfield, progressive spheres, Hyper upped the ante with a pair of superlative mixes under the ‘Bedrock Breaks’ banner before branching out into the endless possibilities of his last set, the high-tech masterpiece ‘Wired’, on his own Kilowatt imprint. This was followed up with ‘Rewired’ at the end of 2007.

His recent output has seen him forming a kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll band under the Hyper moniker, featuring erstwhile Prodigy member Leeroy, ex-Pitchshifter axe-spanker Jim Davies and The Light and PFNs main-man Ronnie. Their critically acclaimed ‘We Control’ album took them out of the clubs and onto the stages of festivals all over the globe, including Glastonbury, Glade, the Sziget Festival in Hungary and Coliseo Ciudad de Atarfe in Spain. Their second album ‘Suicide Tuesday’ is out September 2008.

Great Scott

Great Scott is the host of “MK Ultra,” on KTRU in Houston, is a regular on NSB Radio, has also been a resident DJ in China and was one of the NuSkoolBreaks radio DJs at WMC 2009. Recently Scott also founded and launched a new online radio show, Glitch. FM, which has fast become the centerpiece radio station for the emerging genres of wonky, glitch hop, lazer bass, turbo crunk, acid crunk and whatever else you’d like to call the new edgy instrumental hip hop and breakbeat scenes. Strongly inspired by the sounds of old-school big beat and breaks, including the likes of Fluke, The Prodigy, and Rabbit In The Moon, Scott is constantly attempting to fuse the sounds of the old with that of the new, while trying to achieve a delicate balance between producing music that's meant to make people move, with that which inflicts various emotions and imagery. Scotts sounds often include SE Asian samples and influences and his last two EPs have recoeved strong support on BBC radio and NSB radio amongst others, we'll be hearing a lot more from Scott as he evolves his sound.

You can also find DRC’s original music featured in two music industry documentaries; “Vision of Vibe” with Carl Cox and “Intellect” featuring Paul Van Dyk and many others. It is hard to believe that such groundbreaking talent was spawned in a small town in Idaho, a state famous for its potatoes. Now, DRC is one of America’s most inspiring and talented DJs. She is a true and natural talent and should not to be missed!

DJ Denise

You may not realize it yet, but Denise is your favorite DJ. A veteran of the underground scene who can whip thousands of fans into a screaming frenzy with a few well-timed flicks of the fader, this pint-sized powerhouse is coming to your neighborhood - and she's bringing some huge beats. Her funky-house and hard-house tracks are selected with an expert ear and mixed flawlessly - and her love for great music and her sheer enjoyment of a good party are what keep the music lovers screaming for more.

After playing clubs and raves from Hawaii to Toronto, and collaborating with UK power house Pure Groove Records to release double-disc compilations (Hard Dance Sessions with Steve Hill and Marc Johnson), in 2002 Denise founded Mizumo Music and began releasing quality house tracks. Now, sought after to create remixes as well as original cuts, Denise is fast rising through the ranks of Bay Area producers.

When Thomas Trouble discovered DJ Denise's burgeoning talent in 1998, he knew right away that she would go on to great things. Eleven years later, with a fan base that stretches across the continent, a successful record label, and internationally-released compilations, she has proved him right. But don't take his word for it: get yourself out to a show, and hear for yourself what happens when Denise takes over the tables.

Derek Howell

Derek Howell grew up surrounded by music. His first encounters with music at close range were personified by the purchase of his first record player. A seemingly new world opened up as he was introduced to single after single of popular classics by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Who. Little time passed before cassette tapes, and eventually CD's boasting the sounds of Pink Floyd and Def Leppard filled his cluttered room. His mother, a Country Western singer, greatly encouraged his musical and vocal abilities at every turn, eventually resulting in the desire to create music of his own. This desire was realized when his father purchased what would become Derek's first musical instrument. The guitar consumed Derek's life for the better part of four years as he spent countless hours, day after day, picking away and experimenting with chaining every distortion and effect pedal he had on hand. When the underground dance bug hit southwestern America Derek quickly dropped his guitar and picked up turntables. After listening, fervently, to the sounds of the time in dance music ( Sasha, John Digweed, Dave Seaman), Derek decided that he wanted to spread the good news. He strove to create something fueled by his musical roots, but driven by the future. To this day he has sought to invent a place where the products of others’ musical heydays and his visions of the future of music can come together and groove. At the start of his career he released records on such labels as Fade Records, Bedrock Records and 3 Beat Breaks. He has since had releases on Matthew Dekay’s DK Records, Randall Jones’s Mynt Music imprint, Proton Music and the ever present Global Underground. In addition, he has been featured on quite a few well known compilations including the infamous Nick Warren’s GU 028: Shanghai, Desyn Masiello’s Balance 08, GU’s Electric Calm v2 downtempo compilation as well as their Digitized 2 compilation and two of Hernan Cattaneo’s Renaissance compilations. Derek’s collaboration work with fellow producers Peter Martin and Joshua Michael has birthed the Pinkbox Special/Alley Qats and Lonestar projects respectively, under which releases on Armada Music, Maris Music, Proton Music and Fade Records have ensued. These things being all in the past but certainly never forgotten, Derek's goal for tomorrow and the years to come is to create dance and electronic music, not simply dance tracks. He strives to push himself in different directions and to never be content with settling on any one style, genre or subgenre of the music he chooses to create. Music has always remained a very important part of his life, and that trend shall continue. Hopefully, with a lot of hard work, and a boat load of faith, his music will become an important part of so many others' lives as well.

Way Out West

Titans: a term that!s been fading from public consciousness since the film with the gold fleece and Argonauts. The rise of UK dance music in the early 1990s saw the word in mass circulation, however: “titans” flowered like the Fibonacci sequence, a string of formidable double-acts helping generations choose their own pulse rate. Massive Attack, Leftfield, Underworld, Orbital… all rolled boulders across the plains of electronica; all gave the "90s a hypo. On the prow of some serious Pete Tong time came twelve-bore Bristolites Way Out West: the concord of Nick Warren and Jody Wisternoff, two DJs crackling with invention. See: the shimmering breaks of club hit “The Gift”, a rebirth of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” that sired an alleged four hundred remixes (eat that, “Born Slippy”). See: “UB Devoid”!s tectonic lusciousness, soaring like a runaway hoverboard when the rest of the scene seemed content to animate eighteen-year-olds. The albums that spawned them, Way Out West (1997) and Intensify (2001), were replete with commercial potential--so much so that the duo cut loose for 2004!s Don!t Look Now, galvanizing hordes at a sunkissed Glastonbury when they hit them with the airbrakes of “Anything But You”. The appointment of vocalist Omi left a lot of guest singers biting dust--to chip in on a Way Out West recording meant either instant dancefloor celebrity or worship from the gold-wired audiophiles. A place in the Top 40 was always a likelihood too--the boys have been there and back four times, hitting the Dance #1 spot with “Mindcircus” (2002) and touching the indie crowd with “Don!t Forget Me” (2005).

Four years later, the present day. Messrs Warren and Wisternoff lie poised for the unveiling of We Love Machine: their fourth full album in sixteen years of partnership. The Way Out West LPs come slowly, like comets, but when they hit it!s with the impact of alien technology: Nick!s marriage to his beloved Global Underground line keeps him pinned to a factory of innovators, and Jody!s nu disco sidestep with Starstrings this year showed he can dish out the hits like a cruiserweight. If last summer!s Spaceman EP got your neck hairs prickling as it took Glastonbury!s Dance East by storm, you can expect stars to fall come this September when we get to experience fresh WOW. It!s been a long time coming but you can bet your last breath that the prize will be fast and shiny.
